I have a giant extended family, and we are all very, very close. It’s unusual for a fortnight to go by without a family party taking place. It’s something I am very grateful for, and I realise how lucky I am to have this amazing support network. If you spend any time with me you’ll hear me talking about my cousins. This isn’t unusual. They’re some of my closest, dearest friends.

About 5 years ago my cousin Ryan (pictured in the middle and bottom pictures) convinced my other cousin Jeff (pictured bottom, in the shocking board shorts) and me to go to Ibiza with him. Despite not really liking the sort of music the place is known for, I agreed and I’m glad I did. It was just what the 19-year-old me needed: something completely new and crazy to get me out of my shell.

We stayed in this massive, breathtaking villa with his friends and their friends, all coming from different parts of the world. At the time I knew no one but Jeff and Ryan, but now still consider these holiday mates friends. Whilst there, Ryan hit it off with a Canadian girl, Jacky (pictured top and middle).

A great time was had by all, and we left with a bunch of fond memories. A few months later Ryan took us all by surprise and announced that he was going to Canada to visit Jacky. Upon returning they were dating. A seemingly random fling was now a long-distance relationship.

They continued to fly half way across the world to visit each other until Jacky eventually moved to Australia. It was great, and we all couldn’t be happier for them. About a year later Ryan left his business in the hands of his partner (and me and Jeff who worked for him at the time) and moved to LA so Jacky could get her Green Card and pursue her career as a talent agent. He’s been living between LA and Brisbane for about 2 years now, and Jacky just landed a job at Capitol records.

With her career taking off in LA, and Ryan’s business expanding here in Brisbane, a few of us were worried as to what would happen.

Ryan called me from LA a day ago and was over-joyed to inform me that he had proposed to Jacky and that they were now engaged.

It’s the best news I’ve heard in ages, and I couldn’t be happier.

I’ve been to a lot of weddings over the last couple of years, but these two mean so much to me and I can’t wait to celebrate with them when they come back to Brisbane later in the year.

I didn’t think I would feel compelled to post about this, but it’s really made me happy, hopeful even. Love exists; even if the seeds were sown in a sweaty, molly-fuelled mega club off the coast of Spain, they can grow into a force to be reckoned with, something that can span continents, cross oceans and survive all odds to ensure people who are meant to be together stay together.

Congratulations, Ryan and Jacky.

Edit: That bottom photo is actually from Ibiza, and, whoah, we all look so young and why don’t we have even one full shirt between the three of us?
